Commercially available conc. HCl contains 38% HCl by mass. (a) What is the molarity of this solutions. The density is 1.10 g ML-1? (b) What volume of conc. HCl is resumed to make 1.00 L of 0.10 M HCl?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) Molarity (M) = `(%"age" xx "density" xx 10)/("molar mass")`
`=(38 xx 1.10 xx 10)/(36.5) = 11.45` M
(b) According to molarity equation.
`M_(1)V_(1)` (conc. HCl) `=M_(2)V_(2)` (dil of HCl)
`therefore` Volume of conc. HCl resumed `=(0.10 xx 1.0)/(11.45)`
`= 8.73 xx 10^(-3) L = 8.73 mL`.
