In presence of peroxide, addition of hydrogen bromide to unsymmetrical alkenes takes place against the Markownikoff rule [i.e. Antimarkownikoff rule]. This reaction is restricted to addition of HBr alone but not with hydrogen chloride or hydrogen iodide. This is known as peroxide effect or kharash effect.
