Explain the structure of triple bond of ...

Explain the structure of triple bond of ethynes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Each carbon atom of the ethyne is sp hybridised. One sp hybrid orbital each of the two carbon atoms overlap axially to form C - C sigma bond. The remaining two sp hybrid orbitals overlap with is orbitals of hydrogen to form two C - H sigma bonds. Each carbon atom has two unhybridised p -orbitals. These overlap sideways to form two pi bonds. thus, ethne molecule contains three sigma bonds and two pi bonds. it is a linear molecule with bond angle `180^(@)`. the `C equiv C` bond, (Bond energy 823 KJ/mole ) is stronger than C = C bond (bond energy 681 kJ/mole). Henel C `equiv` C bond length (120 pm) is shorter than C `equiv` C bond (134 pm).
