Why Sc^(3+) salts are colourless whereas...

Why `Sc^(3+)` salts are colourless whereas `Cr^(3+)` salts are coloured.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Sc^(3+)` ions does not contain any unpaired electrons hence d-d transition does not take place.
`Cr^(3+)` ion contain 3 unpaired electrons, hence d-d transition takes place. Therefore `C^(3+)` ions are coloured.
