What are primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Primary alcohols `(1^(@))` are those which -OH is attached to primary carbon atom i.e, one or none alkyl group attached to the carbon atom bonded to -OH group
Ex. `CH_(3)OH" "CH_(3)CH_(2)OH`
`underset("Methanol")(H-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-OH" "underset("Ethanol")(CH_(3)-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-OH)`
Secondary alcohols `(2^(@))` are those in which -OH is attached to secondary carbon atom, i.e, two alkyl groyp are attached to carbon atom bonded to -OH group Ex, `underset("2-propanol (Isopropyl alcohol")(CH_(3)-underset(OH)underset(|)(CH)-CH_(3))`
Tertiary alcohols `(3^(@))` are those in which -OH group is attached to tertiary carbon atom, i.e, three alkyl groups are attached to carbon atom bonded -OH group. Ex. `underset("2-methyl-2-propanol (tert-butyl alcohol")(CH_(3)-underset(CH_(3))underset(|)overset(CH_(3))overset(|)-OH)`
