Mr. Verma (50kg) and Mr. Mathur (60kg) are sitting at the two extremes of a 4 m long boat (40 kg) standing still in water. To discuss a mechanics problem, they come to the middle of the boat. Neglecting frictioin with water how far does the boat move on the water during the process?

Here the system is Mr. Verma + Mr. Mathur + boat. Net force on this system is in horizontal direction is zero and initially the centre of mass of the system is at rest. Therefore the C.O.M does not move in horizontal direction. Let x be the displacement of the boat. Then We can use the concept
`m_(1)x_(1)=m_(v)x_(v)+m_(M)X_(m)`
`40xx x=50xx(2-x)-60(2+x)`
`40x=100-50x-120-60x`
`150x=-20`
`x=-2/15`m

`x~~13` cm (right wards)

Two boys A and B of masses 60kg and 40kg respectively are at the ends of a 4m long boat of mass 100kg which is on water in lake and the system is at rest.If the boys meet at the centre of the boat then find the displacement of centre of mass of the boat in meter (neglect friction between water and boat)

A 10 kg boy standing in a 40 kg boat floating on water is 20 m away from the shore of the river. If the boy moves 8 m on the boat towards the shore, then how far is he from the shore ? (Assume no friction between boat and water).

A boy (mass of 40 kg) is standing at one end of a boat (mass of 60 kg) in still water. The length of the boat is 10 m and the boy takes 2s to reach at other end of boat moving with constant speed. Assuming no friction between the boat and the water. (i) The distance covered by the boat is 4 m (ii) The distance covered by the boy with respect to the ground is 6 m . (iii) The velocity of the boy with respect to the ground is lt 5 m//s (iv) The velocity of the boy is 3 m//s
