Obtain approx. the ratio of the nuclear ...

Obtain approx. the ratio of the nuclear radii of the gold isotope `._79Au^(197)` and silver isotope `._47Ag^(107)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nuclear radius of the gold isotope `""_(79)Au^(197)=R_(Au)`
Nuclear radius of the silver isotope `""_(47)Ag^(107) = R_(Aq)`
Mass number of gold, `A_(Au)` = 197
Mass number of silver, `A_(Ag)` = 107
The ratio of the radii of the two nuclei is related with their mass numbers as:
`(R_(Au))/(R_(Ag))=((R_(Au))/(R_(Ag)))^(1/3)`
`=(197/107)^(1/3)=1.2256`
Hence, the ratio of the nuclear radii of the gold and silver isotopes is about 1.23.

Uranium ores on the earth at the present time typically have a composition consisting of 99.3% of the isotope _92U^238 and 0.7% of the isotope _92U^235 . The half-lives of these isotopes are 4.47xx10^9yr and 7.04xx10^8yr , respectively. If these isotopes were equally abundant when the earth was formed, estimate the age of the earth.
