In a single throw of three dice, find the probability of getting a total of 17 or 18.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If three dice are thrown simultaneously, the total number of sample spaces = 216.
Sample space for getting a total of `17 = {(5, 6, 6), (6, 5, 6), (6, 6, 5)}`
Sample space for getting a total of `18 = {(6, 6, 6)}`
The probability of getting a total of `17 = 3/(216)`
The probability of getting a total of `18 = 1/(216)`
Hence, the probability of getting a total of 17 or `18 = (3/216) +(1/216)`
`= 4/216`
`= 1/54`
