A U tube contains water and methylated spirts separated by mercury columns in the two arms are in level with 10.0cm of water in one arm and 12.5 cm of spirit in the other. What is the relative density of spirit?

Since level of mecury in the two arms of U-tube is same and if `P_(a)` is the atmospheric pressure then
`P_(a)+h_(w)rho_(w)g=P_(a)+h_(s)rho_(s)g`
`implies(rho_(s))/(rho_(w))=(h_(w))/(h_(s))=10/12.5=0.8`
`:.` Specific gravity of spirit `=0.8`
