A block of mass 1 kg lies on a horizontal surface in a truck. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the surface is 0.6. If the acceleration of the truck is `5m//s^2`, the frictional force acting on the block is…………newtons.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The force on the block due to acceleration of the truck will be opposite to the acceleration of truck and will be
`F = ma = 1 xx 5 = 5 N " " `(i)
while the limiting friction ,
`f_(L) = mu_(S)R = mu_(S) "mg" = 0.6 xx 1 xx 9.8 = 5.88 N`
As the applied force F is lesser than limiting friction `f_(L)` , the block will remain at rest in the truck and force of friction will be equal to applied force 5N (and not `f_(L)`) in the direction of acceleration of the truck .
