The bob of a simple pendulum is a spherical hollow ball filled with water. A plugged hole near the bottom of the oscillating bob gets suddenly unplugged. During observation, till water is coming out, the time period of oscillation would

A

first increase and then decrease to the original value

B

first decrease and then increase to the original value

C

remain unchanged

D

increase towards a saturation value

The correct Answer is:
A

The given system is like a simple pendulum, whose effective length (l) is equal to the distance between point of suspension and CG (centre of gravity) of the hanging body.
When water slowly flows out the sphere, the CG of the system is lowered, and hence l increase, which in turn increase time period (as `Tpropsqrt1`).
After some time weight of water left in sphere become less than the weight of sphere itself, so the resultant CG gets closer to CG of sphere itself, i.e., l decreases and hence T decreases. Finally when the sphere becomes empty, the resulting CG is the CG of sphere, i.e., length becomes equal to the original length and hence the time period becomes equal to the same value as when it was full of water.
