The following reaction is known to occur...

The following reaction is known to occur in the body, If `CO_(2)` escapes from the system `CO_(2) + H_(2)O hArr H_(2)CO_(3) hArr H^(+) + HCO_(3)^(-)`

A

`H^(+)` ion concentration increases

B

`H^(+)` ion concentration decreases

C

`H_(2)CO_(3)` concentration does not change

D

The forward reaction will be promoted

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

`CO_(2)+H_(2)O hArr H_(2)CO_(3) hArr H^(+) + HCO_(3)^(-)`
According to Lc Chatclier's principle, if one of the reactant is removed, the reaction proceeds in backward direction and the equilibrium concentration will decrease. If `CO_(2)` escapes from the reaction, `H_(2)CO_(3)` concentration decreases which in turn causes decrease in `H^(+)` ion concentration.
