What is the minimum quantity (in grams) of methyl iodide required for preparing one mole of ethane by Wurtz reaction?

A

142

B

568

C

326

D

284

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Wurtz reaction is,
`CH_(3)I+Na+ICH_(3)overset(Dryether)to C_(2)H_(6)+2NAI`
From the above equation it is clear that 2 moles of methyl iodide `(CH_(3)I)` is required for the preparation of 1 mole of ethane `(C_(2)H_(6))`.
Therefor, weight of 2 moles of `CH_(3)I=2xx(12+3+127)`
`=2xx(142)`
