A horizonta pipeline carrying gasoline has a cross -sectional diameter of 2 mm. If the viscosity and density of the gasoline are `6xx10 ^(-3)` poise and 720 kg //m ^3` respectively , the velocity after which the flow becomes turbulent is

A

`gt 1.66 m/s`

B

`gt 3.33 m/s`

C

`gt 1.6 times 10^-3 m/s`

D

` gt 0.33 m/s`

The correct Answer is:
D

Answer(4) `v = (R eta)/rhod`
Viscosity, `eta = 6 xx 10^-3 poise` .
= `6 xx 10^-3 (10^-1)Nm^2s` .
`6 xx 10^-4 Nm^2s` .
Density, `rho = 720 kg/m^3` .
Diameter, d= 5mm = `5 xx 10^-3m` .
Range of Reynold's number for steady to turbulent flow is `2000 lt R lt 3000` .
`therefore v = (2 xx 10^3 xx 6 xx 10^-4)/(720 xx 5 xx 10^-3) = 0.33 m/sec` .
Hence, flow becomes turbulent when `v gt 0.33 m/sec`
