The ratio of the height above the surface of earth to the depth below, the surface of earth, for gravitational accelerations to be the same (assuming small heights) is

A

0.25

B

0.5

C

1

D

1.25

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

`gh= g (1 - (2h)/(R ))" "…(1)`
`gd = g(1- (d)/(R )) " "…(2)`
On equating (1) & (2) ,
`rArr (1 - (2h)/(R )) = (1 - (d)/(R ))`
`rArr (2h)/( R ) = (d)/(R )`
`therefore (h)/(d) = (1)/(2) = 0.5`
