A compound microscope has an objective of focal length 4 mm and an eye-piece of focal length 25 mm. The objective produces a real image at a distance of 180 mm. If the eye-piece is in normal adjustment the magnification is

A

45

B

90

C

225

D

440

The correct Answer is:
D

For objective lens `1/f_(0)=1/v_(0) -1/u_(0)`
`implies1/4 =1/180 -1/u_(0)`
`implies 1/u_(0)=1/180 – ¼= (1-45)/180=(-44)/180`
`therefore u_(0)= (-180)/44`
The magnification power of a compound microscope is given by,
`m=v_(0)/u_(0) D/f_(e)=180/(180/44) xx 250/25`
( because D=250 mm “least distance of distinct vision”)
`therefore m = 44xx10=440`

A microscope consists of an objective of focal length 1.9 cm and eyepiece of focal length 5 cm. The two lenses are kept at a distance of 10.5 cm. If the image is to be formed at the least distance of distinct vision, the distance at which the object is to be placed before the objective is (least distance of distinct vision is 25 cm)

A compound microscope consists of an object lens of focal length 2 cm and an eyepiece of focal length 5 cm. When an object is placed at 2.2 cm from the object lens, the final image is at 25 cm from the eye lens. What is the distance between the lenses ? What is the total linear magnification ?

A person with a normal near point (25 cm) using a compound microscope with objective of focal length 8.0 mm and an eyepiece of focal length 2.5cm can bring an object placed at 9.0mm from the objective in sharp focus. What is the separation between the two lenses? Calculate the magnifying power of the microscope,
