CO forms addition compound but `CO_2` does not-why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In CO molecule, C-atom has a lone-pair of electrons. By donating thi s lone- pair of electrons CO forms addition compound with metals or non-metals . Also in CO molecule, C - atom exhibits an oxidation no. of +2. So, it can increase its oxidation no. from +2 to +4 by forming addition compounds. On the other hand C-atom in `CO_2` molecule does not have any lone pair of electrons. Besides , C-atom exhibits +4 oxidation state in `CO_2`. So, it has no opportunity to increase its oxidation number. Thus , CO forms addition compound but `CO_2` does not.
