At the bottom section of the coal oven, carbon burns in presence of excess oxygen producing `CO_2`. This `CO_2`, while movmg upwards, is reduced by red hot carbon (coke or coal) to CO in the middle section of the oven. T he CO burns in open air at the top of the oven with blue flame to form `CO_2`.
At the bottom : `C + O_2 to CO_2`
At the middle : `CO_2 + Cto2 CO`
At the top : `2CO + O_2 to 2CO_2`
