Difine buckyball. How is it made ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`C_60`-fullerene is called buckyball. It contains 20 six-membered rings and 12 five-membered rings. It is prepared by heating graphite in an electric arc in presence of an inert gas like argon or helium. The `C_60 and C_70` fullerenes hence formed can be seperated readily by extraction with benzene or toluene followed by chromatography in presence of alumina.
