Describe the shapes of BF3 and BH4^(-) ....

Describe the shapes of `BF_3 and BH_4^(-)` . Assign the hybridisation of boron in these species.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `BF_3` molecule, the B -atom is `sp^2` -hybridised. Thus, `BF_3` molecule contains three bond pairs and exhibits trigonal planar geometry.

On the other hand, in `[BH_4]^(-)` , the B-atom is `sp^3` - hybridised. Thus, `[BH_4]^(-)` contains four bond pairs and exhibits tetrahedral geometry.
