When lead nitrate solution is added to an aqueous solution of `H_2S` , a black precipitate is obtained. However, when lead nitrate solution is added to the filtrate obtained by passing the solution of `H_2S` through activated charcoal, no black precipitate is obtained. Explain these observations.

When lead nitrate solution is added to an aqueous solution of `H_2S`, a reaction leading to the formation of a black precipitate oflead sulphide (PbS) occurs.
`H_2S + Pb(NO_3)_2to PbSdarr("black")+2HNO_3`
Activated charcoal, because of its porous structure, adsorbs gaseous substances. So, when aqueous solution of `H_2S` is filtered through activated charcoal, `H_2 S` is adsorbed by it. Due to absence of `H_2S` in the filtrate, addition oflead nitrate solution does not give any precipitate.
