Explain why C Cl4 is resistant to hydrol...

Explain why `C Cl_4` is resistant to hydrolysis but `SiCl_4` undergo ready hydrolysis.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Carbon does not undergo hydrolysis because carbon cannot extend its coordination number beyond four due to absence of vacant d -orbital in its valence shell. On the other hand, `SiCl_4` can undergo ready hydrolysis because Si has vacant d-orbital in its valence shell and can extend its coordination number beyond four.
