Which of the following compounds will exhibit tautomerism and which do not? Give reasons.
(1) `CH_(3)COCH_(3)`
(2) `C_(6)H_(5)COC_(6)H_(5)`
(3) `C_(6)H_(5)COCH_(3)`
(4) `C_(6)H_(5)CHO`
(5) `MeCCOCHMe_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Tautomerism is possible for those carbonyl compounds which contain at least one `sigma` - H atom (the H - atom attached to carbon atom adjacent to the C = O group). Therefore, the compounds (1) and (3) containing `sigma` - H atom exhbit tautomerism while the compounds (2), (4) and (5) containing no `sigma` - H atom do not exhibit tautomerism.
