Which of the following compounds will exhibit geometrical isomerism and why? (1) `CH_(3)CH=C CI_(2)`
(2) `CH_(3)CH=C CICH_(2)CH_(3)`
(3) `CH_(2)=CH-CH_(2)`

Text Solution

(1) One of the doubly bonded carbon atom is attached to two identical atoms (CI). Therefore, the compound will not exhibit geometricial isomerism.
(2) Each doubly bonded C - atom is attached to two different groups (C - 2 is attached to `CH_(3) ` and H, while C - 3 is attached with CI and `C_(2)H-(5))`. So, it will exhibit geometricial isomerism.
(3) The compound will not exhibit geometrical isomerism because each of the two terminal doubly bonded carbon is attached to two identical atoms (H).
(4) The compound will exhibit geometrical isomerism because each of the two ring carbons is attached to two different groups `(H and CH_(3))`.
(5) The compound will exhibit geometrical isomerism because each of the two ring carbons is attached to two different groups `(H and CH_(3))`.
(6) The compound will not exhibit geometrical isomerism because one of the two doubly bonded carbon atoms is attached to two identical groups (ring moiety).
