The correct order of acid strenghts of benzoic acid (X), peroxyenzoic acid (Y) and p - nitrobenzoic acid (Z) is-

A

`YgtZgtX`

B

`ZgtYgtX`

C

`ZgtXgtY`

D

`YgtXgtZ`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Among X,Y and Z, the conjugate bases of X and Z are resonance stabillised whereas the conjugate bases of Y has no such stability. Among X and Z, due of the presence of electron withdrawing nitro group, conjugate base of Z gets more stabilised than that of X. Thus the order of acidic stranght is - `Z gt X gt Y gt`.
