Which of the following carbocations is expected to be most stable-

A

B

C

D

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

In presence of electron attarching (-I effect) `-NO_(2)` group, positive charge over C - 1 or C - 3 position makes the system least stable whereas electron withdrawing effect of `-NO_(2)` group does not destabilize the system to such an extent when the positive charge resides over C - 4 atom. Thus, ( C ) is the most stable among the given carbocations.
