A `pi` - bond is weaker and more reactive than a `sigma` - bond. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

End - on overlap gives rise to `sigma` - bonds and lateral overlap gives rise to `pi -` bonds. Obviously, the lateral overlap in a `pi` - bond cannot be as effective as the overlap in a `sigma` - bond. Hence a `sigma` - bond is always stronger than a `pi` - bond.
