When a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium formate is used in Kolbe's electrolysis method, no alkane is obtained-why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In Kolbe's electrolysis method, two -R groups of two RCOONa molecules combine to form the alkane , R-R and two `CO_2` molecules are obtained from two `-COONa` groups. As, there is no alkyl group in the salt, sodium formate (HCOONa) no alkane is formed on electrolysis of its concentrated aqueous solution.
