Identify RI and `R^'I` in the following reaction.
`RI+R^'Ioverset(Na//ether)to` Butane+Propane +Ethane. What is the role of ether in this case ?

When Wurtz reaction is carried out with a mixture of RI and `R^'I` two hydrocarbons with even number of carbon atoms `(R-R and R^' -R^')` and one hydrocarbon with odd number of carbon atoms `(R-R^')` are formed.
Among the formed alkanes, butane `(CH_3CH_2Ch_2CH_3)` and ethane `(CH_3CH_3)` are respectively R-R and `R^'-R^'` wherease , propane `(CH_3CH_2CH_3)` is `R-R^'` .
So, it is evident that R is an alkyl group containing two carbon atoms, i.e., ethyl group `(CH_3CH_2-)` and `R^'` is a one carbon atom-containing alkyl group , i.e., methyl group `(-CH_3)` and `R^'I` is methyl iodide `(CH_3I)`. The role of ether in this case is that it acts as a solvent.
