C-=C bond length is shorter than C=C &C-...

`C-=C` bond length is shorter than `C=C &C-C`- why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The `sigma` -bond in `C-=C` is formed due to overlapping of two small sp -hybridised orbitals. C=C, the `sigma`- bond is formed due to overlapping of two bigger `sp^2` -hybridised orbitals whereas in C-C , the `sigma`- bond is formed due to overlapping of two even bigger `sp^3` -hybridised orbitals.
Again , as multiplicity of the bond between two atoms increases, the atoms come closer to each other leading to decrease in bond length . so, bond length follows the order `C-=Clt C=CltC-C`.
