Acetylene is formed by the action of water on calcium carbide. When acetylene gas is passed through ammoniacal silver nitrate solution, white precipitate of silver acetylide `(Ag_2C_2)` is obtained.
`CaC_2+2H_2Oto Ca(OH)_2+HC-=CH` (Acetylene)
`HC-=CH+2AgNO_3+2NH_4OHto AgC-=Agdarr+2NH_4NO_3+2H_2O` Silver acetylide (White)
