Which gas is used in carbide lamps or Hawker's lamp ? How does the gas produce bright illuminating flame in the lamp ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Acetylene gas is used in carbide lamps or Hawker's lamps for producing bright illuminating flame. Percentage of carbon in acetylene is greater than saturated hydrocarbons having same number of carbon atoms. As a result, incomplete combustion of acetylene gas takes place and the heated carbon particles thus formed produce illuminating flame and bright light .
