Why iodobenzene cannot be prepared direc...

Why iodobenzene cannot be prepared directly by combining benzene and iodine in presence of iron fillings ? Why is this reaction possible in presence of nitric acid ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Iodobenzene cannot be directly prepared by combining benzene and iodine because the reaction is reversible in nature. However, in presence of nitric acid, this reaction becomes possible because nitric acid oxidises the hydrogen iodide as it is formed and so drives the reaction to the right.

Why can aryl halides not be prepared by reaction of phenol with HCl in the presence of ZnCl_(2) ?

Assertion (A) : Arly iodides can be prepared by reaction of arenes with iodine in the presence of an oxidising agent. Reason (R) : Oxidising agent oxidises I_(2) into HI.

Aryl chlorides and bromides can be easily prepared by electropilic substitution of arenes with chlorine and bromine respectively in the presence of Lewis acid catalysts. But why does preparation of aryl iodides requires presence of an oxidising agent?

An organic compound A (C_8H_6) reacts with dilute H_2SO_4 in presence of mercuric chloride to produce another compound (B) . B is also obtained when benzene reacts with an acid chloride in presence of anhyd. AlCl_3 . Identify A and B and give the reactions involved.

An organic compound (A) with molecular formula C_(8)H_(8)O forms an orange-red precipitate with 2,4-DNP reagent and gives yellow precipitate on heating with iodine in the presence of sodium hydroxide. It neither reduces Tollens or Fehlings reagent, nor does it decolourise bromine water or Baeyerâs reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, it gives a carboxylic acid (B) having molecular formula C_(7)H_(6)O_(2) . Identify the compounds (A) and (B) and explain the reactions involved.

An organic compound [A] C_(8)H_(6) on reacting with dilute sulphuric acid containing mercuric sulphate gives a compound [B] which can also be obtained from a reaction of bezene with acid chloride in the presence of anhydrous AlCl_(3) . The compound [B] when treated with iodine and aqueous NaOH yields [C] and a yellow compound [D]. Identify [A],[B],[C] and [D] with justification. Show how [B] is formed from [A].
