Out of benzene, m-dinitrobenzene and toluene which will undergo nitration most easily and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitration of the benzene ring is an electrophilic substitution reaction. In this reaction, presence of an activating group `(-CH_(3))` increases the reactivity of the benzene ring, whereas presence of a deactivating group `(-NO_(2))` decreases the reactivity of the benzene ring. Therefore, order of nitration is toluene `gt` benzene `gt` m-dinitrobenzene.
