Find out the ratio of rate of diffusion...

Find out the ratio of rate of diffusion of `H_(2)` and `SO_(2)` . (S = 32)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If the rates of diffusion of `H_(2)` and `SO_(2)` gas at constant temperature and pressure are `r_(H_(2))` and `r_(SO_(2))` , then according to Graham's law of diffusion ,
`(r_(H_(2)))/(r_(SO_(2))) = sqrt((M_(SO_(2)))/(M_(H_(2))))` , where `M_(H_(2))` = molecular weight of `H_(2)` gas and `M_(SO_(2)) = 32 + (16 xx 2) = 64`
`therefore (r_(H_(2)))/( r_(SO_(2))) = sqrt((64)/(2)) = 4 sqrt2`
or , `r_(H_(2)): r_(SO_(2)) = 4sqrt2 : 1`
