The activation energy of the exothermic ...

The activation energy of the exothermic reaction `ArarrB " is "40"kJ."mol"^(-1)` . The heat of reaction is `15"kj.mol"^(-1)` . What is the activation energy for the backward reaction ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reaction is exothermic, `DeltaH=-15"kJ.mol"^(-1)`
Enthalpy of the reaction `(DeltaH)` = activation energy of the forward reaction- the activation energy of the backward reaction.
or, `-15"kJ.mol"^(-1)=40"kJ.mol"^(-1)` - the activation energy of the backward reaction. Thus, the activation energy of the backward reaction = (40+15) = `55kJ."mol"^(-1)`
