Zinc reacts with HCl to form `ZnCl_(2) and H_(2)` why is it found that the reaction occurs at higher. rate when Zn-dust instead of a Zn -wire is used ?

Text Solution

For a heterogeneous reaction, if one of the reactant is solid, then the rate of the reaction depends on the surface area of the solid reactant. Larger the surface area of the reactant, faster the reaction and higher the reaction- rate Zn- dust has much larger surface area compared to Zn- wire and hence reaction of Zn with HCl undergeos at a faster rate with Zn-dust.
