The value of DeltaG for a reaction is n...

The value of `DeltaG` for a reaction is negative at `25^(@)C` and I atm. Explain whether the reaction is fast or slow.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At a definite pressure and temperature, the negative value a `DeltaG` for a reaction indicates the possibility of the reaction to occur spontaneously. There is no relation between `DeltaG` and the rate of the reaction. For example, in the case of the reaction `C(s)+O_(2)rarrCO_(2)(g),DeltaG^(0)` is negative at 298k and 1 atm pressure. But no change is observed even when carbon is exposed to air for a long time . This is because the reaction of carbon with oxygen involves very high activation energy and hence it occurs at an imperceptible rate. Thus, the rate of a reaction cannot be predicted form the value of `DeltaG`
