What are lyophilic and lyophobic sols? Give one example of each type. Why are hydrophobic sols easily coagulated?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Second part: Stability of hydrophobic sols is due to the presence of charges on the sol particles. These charges can be removed by addition of suitable electrolytes. On doing so, the particles come together and form aggregates and eventually coagulate and settle down. Stability of hydrophobic sols is also due to the solvation of the colloidal particles. Hence, removal of both of these factors can easily coagulate hydrophobic sols.
