Soap or similar kind of substances are called colloidal electrolytes-Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the molecular structure of soap or soap-like substances (detergent or quaternary ammonium salts), there is an ionisable group at one end of a long hydrocarbon ions. These molecules in water dissociate to form ions with a long hydrocarbon chain. In case of soaps, anions consist of long hydrocarbon chain, while in case of quaternary ammonium salts, cations consist of long hydrocarbon chain. At a particular concentration of the solution, these ions associate to form micelles having colloidal dimensions. Since, micelles are ionic in nature, the colloidal solution thus produced conduct electricity. So, solution of soap or substances of similar type are colloidal electrolytes.
