In organic reactions `PCl_(5)` acts as a chlorinating agent. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the trigonal bipyramidal `PCl_(5)` molecule, the two axial P - Cl bonds are longer and weaker than the three equatorial P-CI bonds. Hence, the molecule is not very stable. Upon heating, the two axial P-CI bonds dissociate to give `PCI_(3)` and `Cl_(2)(PCl_(5)overset(Delta)toPCl_(3)+Cl_(2))`. Hence, `PCl_(5)` acts as a chlorinating agent.
