Liquor ammonia bottles are to be opened ...

Liquor ammonia bottles are to be opened only after cooling- why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Liquor ammonia is actually a concentrated solution (35%) of ammonia. Solubility of ammonia in water decreases with rise in temperature. So, when the atmospheric temperature increases, some dissolved ammonia comes out of the solution and creates a high pressure inside the bottle. It is known that ammonia is injurious to our eyes. When this bottle is opened, ammonia gas along with some ammonia solution suddenly comes out of the bottle as a fountain and causes eye accident. To prevent such accident, the bottle is cooled before opening because on cooling the solubility of ammonia increases and the pressure decreases.
