Why does a hot Pt-wire becomes brighter when `NH_(3)` gas is passed over it?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Catalytic oxidation of `NH_(3)` is an exothermic reaction.
`4NH_(3) + 5SO_(2)to4NO + 6H_(2)O` + heat
So, when `NH_(3)` is passed over a hot Pt-wire, a large amount of heat is released. This heat is absorbed by the Pt-wire which causes it to become brighter.
