Mention an observation which supports that +5 oxidation state of Bi is less stable than +3 oxidation state.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since the inert pair effect is maximum in case of Bi, therefore, its +5 oxidation sate is less stable then +3 oxidation state. This is evident from the observation that `BiCl_(3)` does not form `BiCl_(5)` even when heated with `Cl_(2)` for a long time.
