H(2)S is acidic but H(2)O ls neutraJ in ...

`H_(2)S` is acidic but `H_(2)O` ls neutraJ in nature-why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the size of S-atom is larger than that of O-atom, the S- H bond is longer than the O - H bond. Consequently, the S- H bond is weaker than the O - H bond. The weaker S-H bond easily dissociates in water to give `H^(+)` ion but the relatively stronger O-H bond does not. Hence, `H_(2)S` is acidic in nature but `H_(2)O` is neutral.
