Conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` cannot be used for drying HBr/HI-why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises HBr and HI to red bromine and brown iodine, respectively.
`2HBoverset(-1)(r)+H_(2)overset(+6)(S)O_(4)toBoverset(r)_(2)+overset(+4)(S)O_(2)+2H_(2)O`
`2Hoverset(-1)(I)+H_(2)overset(+6)(S)O_(4)tooverset(I)_(2)+overset(+4)(S)O_(2)+2H_(2)O`
Hence, HBr or HI cannot be dried by conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`.
