`H_(2)S` and `H_(2)` cannot be dried by passing it through conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` - why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` oxidises `H_(2)S` to S and is itself reduced to `SO_(2)` . Hence, conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` cannot be used for drying `H_(2)S`.
`H_(2)overset(+6)(S)O_(4)+H_(2)overset(-2)(S)to2H_(2)O+overset(+4)(S)O_(2)+overset(0)(S)`
The heat liberated on absorption of water by conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` is sufficient to ignite `H_(2)` gas. Therefore, to avoid accident, conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` is not used for drying `H_(2)` gas.
