Arrange the oxoacids of chlorine in the ...

Arrange the oxoacids of chlorine in the order of increasing acidic strength and explain the orders.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Acidic strength: With increase in the number of oxygen in the conjugate base of the oxoacid, their resonance stabilization increases. Therefore, the order of increasing stability of the conjugate base: `CIO^(-) lt CIO_(2)^(-) lt CIO_(3)^(-) lt CIO_(4)`. Consequently, with increase in stability of the conjugate base, the acidic strength of the oxoacids increases in the order:
`HClO lt HCIO_(2) lt HClO_(3) lt HClO_(4)`
