What do you mean by pseudo halide ions and pseudo halogens? Give examples.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A number of uninegative ions which consists of two or more atoms and have properties similar to those of halide ions are called pseudohalide ions or pseudohalides. For example, cyanide, `(CN^(-))`, thiocyanate, `SCN^(-)` , cyanate, `OCN^(- )`etc. As the dimer of halide ions are called halogens, the covalent dimers of the pseudohalide ions are called pseudohalogens or halogenoids. For example, cyanogen, `(CN)_(2)` , thiocyanogen, `(SCN)_(2)` , oxycyanogen, `(OCN)_(2)` etc.
