`CN^(-)` ion is known but `CP^(-)` ion is unknown-why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to smaller size and higher electronegativity, N can form `ppi -ppi` multiple bonds with C. Thus, it forms `C equiv N^(-)` ion. On the other hand, due to larger size and lower electronegativity, P does not from multiple bonds with C and hence, `CP^(-)` ion is unknown.
